The Source Audio Encounter Delay + Reverb builds upon the foundation established by the Collider, utilizing an identical chassis while introducing a fundamentally different algorithmic approach. The primary differentiator centers on the selection and distribution of processing engines, featuring three newly developed algorithms alongside a curated mix from the established Nemesis and Ventris lines.
The hardware configuration retains the Mini USB connection standard—a choice that feels increasingly anachronistic in an era dominated by USB-C connectivity. Despite this legacy interface, the unit maintains full compatibility with Source Audio's Neuro software ecosystem. The physical layout mirrors its predecessor: dual footswitches handling delay/tap and reverb functions, three main rotary encoders, mode selection, and two context-sensitive controls designated as Control 1and Control 2. These variable controls adapt their parameters based on the active algorithm, necessitating regular consultation of the user manual.
The delay architecture incorporates six distinct processing engines: Noise Tape, Resonant, Drum Echo, Echoverb, the newly introduced Kaleidoscope, and Helix. The reverb section matches this count with six engines of its own: the new Hypersphere and Shimmers algorithms, alongside TremVerb, Reverse, Lo-Fi, and Swell. This selection contrasts markedly with the Collider's more traditional algorithm suite, positioning the Encounter as the more experimental offering.
Operationally, the unit functions as a stereo ambient processor for delay and reverb effects, maintaining signal integrity through an analog dry signal path. Direct access to eight presets is available via the pedal controls, with MIDI expanding this to 128 total preset locations. External control integration accommodates expression pedals or switches, while delay timing subdivision offers quarter note, dotted eighth, or triplet divisions. Connectivity includes standard DIN MIDI In/Thru ports and a 3.5mm control interface for Source Audio's peripheral devices. Power consumption requires 9V DC center-negative supply, drawing approximately 280mA.
The Encounter's development philosophy represents algorithm redistribution rather than hardware innovation—essentially the same platform hosting three new engines: Kaleidoscope, Hypersphere, and Shimmers. The 6-delay, 6-reverb configuration creates operational symmetry while introducing fresh sonic possibilities within a familiar control framework.
Market positioning establishes pricing at $399 USD / €429 / £369, with widespread availability anticipated through conventional retail channels.
